Schouwen-Duiveland

Schouwen-Duiveland is surrounded by the North Sea, National Park Oosterschelde and the Grevelingenmeer and has just as many special places underneath as above water.

The question

Schouwen-Duiveland is a region whose population is gradually decreasing (shrinking region). By means of island marketing, the municipality wants to keep the island socially, economically and demographically strong. By structurally building the Schouwen-Duiveland brand, the municipality wants to position the island as an attractive region in which to live, work and stay.

Island marketing was completed by the municipality itself in the first five years. After this period, the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland and stakeholders needed an evaluation and a look ahead to the coming period. This also raised the question of how island marketing can be organized more sustainably in the future.

Our approach

Discussions were held with relevant stakeholders, such as the municipality, companies, business associations, VVV, housing association, etc. The discussions included tasks, roles and responsibilities, organizational forms and governance. In addition, desk research has taken place into relevant policy documents, visions and strategies.

Our approach

The result is a report that includes an evaluation including points for attention for the future. In addition, an answer has been given to the question of which tasks and roles island marketing should fulfill in the coming years, which organizational options are appropriate, what governance can look like and preconditions for success and financing.
